While we were performing overseas in Djibouti last year for the military I ended up talking with a soldier who had gotten married a few days before his deployment and had basically missed the entire first year of his marriage while being deployed.
He asked if I could write a song for his wife that he could play for her when he got home… His sadness and sincerity really touched me… Especially knowing the fact that his story is far from unique. When I got back to Nashville I sat down with my friend Ruth Collins and we wrote a song for them.
We would like to dedicate it to that couple and every military couple that are sacrificing so much for all of us.
Lyrics:
I had to fly away… so far away from where you are
Sometimes on lonely nights when things just get too hard
I think of you
It’s helps to know you’re thinking of me too
I don’t know… don’t know how long this will take
But I know I’m only strong because of your strength
With oceans between
You’re still everything that I will ever need
I know I missed your birthday
And sleeping in on Saturdays
And I missed the fireworks in your eyes
On the fourth of July
Our anniversary
And kissin you on NewYear’s Eve
But of all the things I’ve missed back home
I’ve missed you the most
You’re always there right there in my memory
Like an angel watching over me
You feel so close
I swear that it’s almost like you’re here
Chorus
I’m sorry that I’m missing
So many moments with you
But you’re the reason
The one I’m fighting for
Baby I know I’ve missed a million memories
But when I get home we’ll make million more
A lifetime more
Chorus
